ShoreTel Adds 400 Series IP Phones to Line-Up, Bringing Unique Features and Optimal Usability

Building on its line of brilliantly simple IP phones, ShoreTel® (http://www.shoretel.com/) (NASDAQ: SHOR), the leading provider of unified communications (UC) systems (http://www.shoretel.com/solutions/unified_communications/benefits), including business phone systems (http://www.shoretelsky.com/products/), applications and mobile UC solutions (http://www.shoretel.com/solutions/enterprise_mobility), today launched the ShoreTel 400 series IP phones.  This line includes four new IP phone models that expand the ShoreTel portfolio to deliver new functionality and enhanced usability, including visual voicemail, an advanced user interface, and built-in diagnostics.

ShoreTel is the only UC provider to offer a choice of communication solutions and endpoints that optimise how users communicate in the work environment for maximum productivity by providing the best possible user experience.

“Whether a customer communicates with desk phones, smart phones, tablets, laptops or PCs, ShoreTel enables them to choose the device best suited to their needs,” said Pej Roshan, Vice President of Product Management at ShoreTel.  “The ShoreTel 400 series IP phones incorporate the latest user feedback resulting in new functionality and optimal usability.”

Visual voicemail simplifies message management and increases productivity by allowing users to scroll through messages to access, listen, respond, delete and save them in any order.  With this feature, users can pick the messages they want to listen to and erase or archive them right from the phone screen.

The intuitive user interface of the 400 series IP phones extends the proven ergonomic advantages of ShoreTel IP phones.  Specifically, the display is closer to vertical for better readability with a five-way control for quick navigation through screens and menu options, and the keypad is closer to horizontal for more ease when dialling and using the function keys.  The lighter handset offers more comfort and the phones have a smaller footprint for reduced use of space on the desktop.

“The feedback from our users has been fantastic,” said Todd Stone, CIO at QMACS, a ShoreTel U.S. customer.  “The employees like the phone’s larger display, the tactile response of the keypad buttons and the increased number of buttons/lines.  We believe the new functionality and enhanced usability will ultimately lead to increased employee productivity.”

Built-in diagnostic tools on the 400 series IP phones also enable help-desk staff to quickly identify issues and provide faster problem resolution, which means less downtime and higher user satisfaction.

Availability

The IP 400 series phones are available now for customers looking to install a new ShoreTel 14 system.  The phones offer greater flexibility by supporting premise deployments at launch and ShoreTel Sky® services in early calendar year 2014.  For customers who are considering an upgrade to their existing premises-based solution or a move to a cloud solution, the IP 400 series phones support either deployment model or a combination of both.

Zain Kuwait to Bundle iPass with iOS and Android Phones

iPass Inc. (http://www.ipass.com/) (NASDAQ: IPAS), a leading provider of mobile services for enterprises (http://www.ipass.com/solutions/ipass-enterprise-mobility-services/) and telecom service providers (http://www.ipass.com/open-mobile-exchange/), announced today that Zain Kuwait, a pioneer of mobile telecommunications in the Middle East and North Africa with more than 41 million customers, will bundle “Zain Pass” with all iOS and Android phones. Zain Pass is an International Wi-Fi Roaming services that allows subscribers to roam the world’s largest commercial Wi-Fi network when travelling outside of Zain Kuwait’s domestic serving area.

According to a recent iPass survey on international data roaming, 98 percent of respondents own at least one smartphone, and more than one-third (33.8 percent) travel with two or more. The survey showed high levels of smartphone adoption across all geographies, including emerging markets. International travelers regularly spend large sums of money at airports and hotels to access Wi-Fi when abroad, and the new bundle allows Zain Kuwait to capture that spend.

“The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) reports that international tourism exceeded one billion for the first time ever in 2012, equating to 3.8 percent year-on-year growth from 2011. The volume of international travel is set for robust growth again this year, with the UNWTO forecasting an increase of 3-4 percent in 2013. Since each international trip represents a potential roaming event, the addressable market for international Wi-Fi roaming has never been greater,” said Steve Livingston, senior vice president at iPass. “With international travel now at record highs and multiple-smartphone ownership so common among these travelers, Zain Kuwait has significantly increased the value of its core products and services with Zain Pass.”

“Smartphone owners expect their in-home or in-office Wi-Fi experience to be replicated when they travel internationally,” said Zain Kuwait CEO Omar Al Omar. “The inclusion of international Wi-Fi access for our subscriber base is of high strategic importance to Zain Kuwait and strongly differentiates us from our competition by making it even easier for Zain Pass subscribers to connect to any of the 1.2 million Wi-Fi venues offered. By working with iPass, we are accelerating our time-to-market with international-Wi-Fi-roaming services and leveraging their knowledge about best practices learned from over a decade of Wi-Fi leadership.”

Connected Health: How Mobile Phones, Cloud and Big Data Will Reinvent Healthcare

Our current healthcare system is in need of a radical reinvention. Traditional approaches have not brought the rapid change required by aging populations and the rising costs of healthcare, and government efforts too often get bogged down in partisan politics and fail to address systemic issues.

Thankfully, there is hope on the horizon. New approaches that embrace game-changing technology — mobile networks, big data, social media, and the Internet of things — could completely disrupt the status quo and transform the healthcare system. For this change to occur, we must create new institutions and collaborative markets and promote a cultural shift in how we think about medicine, health, and the body. Only then will the path to disruptive innovation be able to overcome its many obstacles and reach a future where health strategists are conversant in the tools and technologies of cooperation.

This volume provides a comprehensive overview of the emerging connected health ecosystem, including the startups and traditional technology players shaping the future of healthcare and innovative approaches by the government that demonstrate the need to move beyond the tired rhetoric of big government versus the market in healthcare.

Mobile Phones: The New Talking Drums of Everyday Africa

'We cannot imagine life now without a mobile phone' is a frequent comment when Africans are asked about mobile phones. They have become part and parcel of the communication landscape in many urban and rural areas of Africa and the growth of mobile telephony is amazing: from 1 in 50 people being users in 2000 to 1 in 3 in 2008. Such growth is impressive but it does not even begin to tell us about the many ways in which mobile phones are being appropriated by Africans and how they are transforming or are being transformed by society in Africa. This volume ventures into such appropriation and mutual shaping.

Rich in theoretical innovation and empirical substantiation, it brings together reflections on developments around the mobile phone by scholars of six African countries (Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, Mali, Sudan and Tanzania) who explore the economic, social and cultural contexts in which the mobile phone is being adopted, adapted and harnessed by mobile Africa.

Technomobility in China: Young Migrant Women and Mobile Phones (Critical Cultural Communication)

As unprecedented waves of young, rural women journey to cities in China, not only to work, but also to “see the world”and gain some autonomy, they regularly face significant institutional obstacles as well as deep-seated anti-rural prejudices. Based on immersive fieldwork, Cara Wallis provides an intimate portrait of the social, cultural, and economic implications of mobile communication for a group of young women engaged in unskilled service work in Beijing, where they live and work for indefinite periods of time.

While simultaneously situating her work within the fields of feminist studies, technology studies, and communication theory, Wallis explores the way in which the cell phone has been integrated into the transforming social structures and practices of contemporary China, and the ways in which mobile technology enables rural young women—a population that has been traditionally marginalized and deemed as “backward” and “other”—to participate in and create culture, allowing them to perform a modern, rural-urban identity. In this theoretically rich and empirically grounded analysis,Wallis provides original insight into the co-construction of technology and subjectivity as well as the multiple forces that shape contemporary China.

The Mobile Connection: The Cell Phone's Impact on Society (Interactive Technologies)

Has the cell phone forever changed the way people communicate? The mobile phone is used for "real time” coordination while on the run, adolescents use it to manage their freedom, and teens "text” to each other day and night. The mobile phone is more than a simple technical innovation or social fad, more than just an intrusion on polite society. This book, based on world-wide research involving tens of thousands of interviews and contextual observations, looks into the impact of the phone on our daily lives. The mobile phone has fundamentally affected our accessibility, safety and security, coordination of social and business activities, and use of public places.

Based on research conducted in dozens of countries, this insightful and entertaining book examines the once unexpected interaction between humans and cell phones, and between humans, period. The compelling discussion and projections about the future of the telephone should give designers everywhere a more informed practice and process, and provide researchers with new ideas to last years.

*Rich Ling (an American working in Norway) is a prominent researcher, interviewed in the new technology article in the November 9 issue of the New York Times Magazine.
*A particularly "good read", this book will be important to the designers, information designers, social psychologists, and others who will have an impact on the development of the new third generation of mobile telephones.
*Carefully and wittily written by a senior research scientist at Telenor, Norway's largest telecommunications company, and developer of the first mobile telephone system that allowed for international roaming.

snom IP Phones Deliver Out-of-the-Box Provisioning Speeds & Simplify Microsoft Lync Voice Deployment

Snom 7xx series and snom 821 UC edition phones now offer seamless, out-of-the-box configuration with Lync server directly from the phone for fast, plug-and-play provisioning; snom also introduces integration and features for snom standards-based SIP phones compatible and qualified for enterprise Lync deployments, including enhanced Better Together and 802.1x authentication.

Snom technology AG (http://www.snom.com/), a leading developer and vendor of IP business phones, announced today new auto-configuration capabilities for its snom UC edition 7xx series and snom 821 business phones, designed to simplify and speed Microsoft Lync deployments in the enterprise.

The snom 7xx series and snom 821 UC edition phones feature new base firmware that enables the phones to natively connect to the Lync server for out-of-the box configuration, enabling fast and streamlined provisioning for these SIP-based phones in multi-site enterprise Microsoft Lync environments.

“snom continues to find new ways to simplify Lync with Voice deployments by improving connectivity and compatibility of standards-based snom UC edition phones,” said Dr. Michael Knieling, COO, snom technology AG. “We’re the first standards-based Lync-qualified phones to offer plug-and-play integration with Lync, taking our product portfolio a step beyond other market options. Our easy configuration process and new features will continue to address critical Lync Voice requirements in enterprise businesses.”

The snom 7xx series – featuring the snom 710 (http://www.snom.com/en/products/ip-phones/snom-710/), 720 (http://www.snom.com/en/products/ip-phones/snom-720/) and 760 (http://www.snom.com/en/products/ip-phones/snom-760/) IP phones – and the snom 821 (http://www.snom.com/en/products/ip-phones/snom-821/) all employ the company’s Apollo firmware and have passed the Microsoft Compatible (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/lync/gg278172) Devices Program’s rigorous testing process for full qualification and certification with Lync. The snom UC edition portfolio offers businesses a wide range of phones covering any deployment requirement – from factory floor and lobby models to executive desktop devices.

· The snom 7xx series – snom 760, 720 and 710 IP Phones: The new snom 7xx series of Lync-qualified phones offers businesses three models of affordable, full-featured IP phones: the advanced executive snom 760 UC edition desktop phone for senior managers and knowledge workers, featuring excellent audio, PBX-style keys and rich visual information; the snom 720 UC edition IP multi-purpose manager-level desktop phone, also offering advanced audio and rich visuals; and the snom 710 UC edition, a general office phone for the cubicle workforce, appropriate for small or large-scale deployments in a multitude of business scenarios. All phones feature a sleek, ergonomic design, support for high definition wideband voice, programmable function keys and an intuitive user interface with integrated Lync features.

· Snom 821 IP Phone: The snom 821 UC edition desktop phone is an advanced IP desktop model for the executive or knowledge worker. It features a sleek and elegant design, high resolution colour display and advanced presence features integrated with call history and the contact list.

New Level of Lync Compatibility & Integration

Snom also revealed support for several enhanced Lync features for its snom UC edition phones, now in an advanced development stage and set for release in the coming months.

· Enhanced Better Together: Deeper integration and support for Lync collaboration and calling features, including Click to Call.

· 802.1x Authentication: Robust, wired endpoint security for Lync with voice deployments.

· Lync Conference User Interface: Enhanced, seamless user experience for joining and participating in Lync web conferences, using snom UC edition phones.

Select snom UC edition models feature a combination of Lync’s most advanced features, including the ability to add multiple people to an existing call, Boss/Admin, Call Park, Music on Hold, search capabilities for global and Lync contacts and call transfer capabilities to mobile phones. All models offer easy configuration with PIN authentication and manageability features that include automatic updates.

“snom’s endpoint out-of-the-box provisioning provides a huge benefit to businesses and Microsoft Partners, who will value plug-and-play configuration from the phone to Lync server infrastructure,” added Knieling “snom’s standards-based SIP Lync-qualified phones continue to raise the bar, offering the same high quality Lync compatibility, features and integration as comparable Lync-compatible endpoints, but at a far more affordable price.”
