Amazon Cloud is great, but not for business

Amazon added a new element to its Cloud Drive service this week that expands it usefulness. The new Cloud Drive Sync app keeps files in sync across different devices and platforms, and pits Amazon Cloud Drive head-to-head against rivals such as Google, Microsoft, and Apple. However, businesses should steer clear of Amazon Cloud Drive.

The Amazon Cloud Drive Sync app is available for Windows or Mac OS X. Similar to other cloud file syncing tools, the app places a folder on your PC. Any files saved to the designated folder are automatically synced to Amazon Cloud Drive, and instantly available from any device that can access Amazon Cloud. By default, the local Amazon Cloud Drive folder created on a Windows or Mac OS X PC includes sub-folders for Documents, Pictures, and Videos. Amazon doesn’t offer a very consistent experience across platforms, though.

The Kindle Fire stores and accesses the data through separate tabs of the mobile OS: Docs, Photos, Videos, and Music. It can get a little confusing because a JPG file stored in the Documents sub-folder on a Windows or Mac OS X PC ends up in Photos on the Kindle Fire, while a video clip stored under Documents will be found in Videos. It makes sense, logically, but may throw people off because the files are not located in the same place from device to device.

Cloud Drive and Cloud Player are related, but distinctly different services. On the Web, there is an additional folder called Archived Music. That folder (which also shows up as a folder under Docs on the Kindle Fire), contains the music files from Amazon Cloud Player. However, Amazon Cloud Player is still a separate service, and uploading or playing music should be done through that. You can download music files from this folder, or click on a file to play it in the default music player. However, uploading or syncing music files, playing entire albums, or shuffling playlists should be done through Amazon Cloud Player.

All in all, Amazon Cloud is on a par more or less with other cloud storage and syncing services. With 5GB of free storage for data that can be automatically synced and accessed from a diverse range of platforms and devices, Amazon Cloud users should check out what it has to offer—especially people who use a Kindle Fire, or frequently purchase content from Amazon.

Amazon Cloud Drive is not a business tool, though. As we’ve seen with Dropbox and other consumer-oriented cloud storage services, users often take matters into their own hands and store data in such cloud services for convenience. However, that data can't be accessed, managed or protected by the business, which could lead to exposing sensitive information.

Box, Dropbox for Teams, Google Drive for Business, and Microsoft SharePoint or SkyDrive Pro are examples of services that provide similar cloud storage, data syncing and file sharing capabilities, while also giving IT the tools necessary to manage access, enforce policies, and protect the data. Ultimately, the single biggest factor in choosing a cloud storage and file syncing service is which ecosystem you rely on. Google Drive, Microsoft SkyDrive and Apple iCloud all make perfect sense for users invested in the platforms and tools related to those respective ecosystems.

Amazon Cloud is a solid competitor for all of the above, and the no-brainer choice for users of Kindle Fire tablets, or for avid Amazon customers. However, Amazon Cloud Drive is a consumer-centric service that lacks the oversight IT admins need to control and protect business data. Amazon provides guidance for businesses that wish to block access to Cloud Drive. It recommends that businesses block DNS resolution for zcd-00.s3.amazonaws.com to prevent access to Cloud Drive, and zcd-01.s3.amazonaws.com to block access to Amazon Cloud Player from corporate networks.

You might not want to count on that solution, though. At least check frequently to ensure that it’s still working. That solution will only work as long as those specific URLs are required to access Cloud Drive or Cloud Player, and Amazon notes that the specifications are subject to change at any time.

The 4 security controls your business should take now

There never will be a perfect computer or network defense. Computer security is a constantly elevating game of cat-and-mouse. As quickly as you address the latest threat, attackers have already developed a new technique to access your network and compromise your PCs. But if you focus on the fundamentals, you can minimize your risk and defend against most attacks.

Small companies have limited IT resources, and can’t possibly defend against every possible exploit or attack. How do you know what to prioritize? Start with the 20 Critical Security Controls report, written by the Center for Internet Security (CIS), the SANS Institute, and the National Security Agency (NSA). To help businesses and governments, they have defined the security controls that block the most frequent attacks.

Speaking recently at the RSA Security conference, Philippe Courtot, chairman and CEO of Qualys, cautioned against mistaking compliance for security. He stressed that security should facilitate rather than impede business goals, naming the report as a valuable starting point. John Pescatore, director of the SANS Institute, drew a comparison to the Pareto principle. The axiom commonly referred to as the “80/20 rule” says essentially that 20 percent of the effort or input results in 80 percent of the output.

It turns out that the top 20 priorities you should tackle to address 80 percent of the possible attacks against your network and PCs are common-sense fundamentals that have long been best security practices. However, even this relatively narrow list is too broad. To break it down further, here are the top four security controls you should put into practice immediately.

You can't stay on top of every vulnerability and exploit for every device made, and you can't protect things if you don't even know they exist. Take an accurate inventory of both your physical and virtual servers, as well as the PCs, smartphones, tablets, and other devices connected to your network or in use in your environment.

Trying to keep track of every device on your network manually is impractical—and it wouldn't help you monitor the rogue, unauthorized devices. You should use an asset tracking tool like GFI MAX or QualysGuard to automate the process. Similarly, you can't follow every flaw in every application ever written, either. Know what software is on the devices connected to your network in order to determine the risk and potential impact of any emerging threats.

Maintaining an accurate inventory of the hardware and software used on your network is difficult—especially without a tool to automate the process. However, the same tools used for taking an inventory of hardware can monitor applications as well. Most attacks exploit known vulnerabilities—publicly disclosed flaws that vendors have already developed patches for. Even if there is no active exploit in the wild, once a vendor releases a patch attackers can reverse-engineer it to create a new attack. A system of vulnerability assessment and patch management will help you plug those holes before attackers find them.

New vulnerabilities are discovered almost constantly, though, so almost as soon as you conduct a vulnerability scan the results are outdated. If you use a tool like QualysGuard, or nCircle PureCloud, you can set up automated vulnerability scans to be conducted on a regular basis. The vast majority of attacks come in the form of malware, including viruses, worms, Trojans, botnets, and rootkits. If you have antimalware protection in place—such as McAfee Internet Security 2013 or BitDefender Internet Secuirty 2013—and keep it updated regularly, it should be able to detect and block known malware threats. Most antimalware tools also include heuristic techniques capable of identifying suspicious or malicious behavior to defend against new, unknown attacks. The 20 Critical Security Controls have been around for a few years, but they're periodically updated.

The Great Indian Phone Book: How the Cheap Cell Phone Changes Business, Politics, and Daily Life

In 2001, India had 4 million cell phone subscribers. Ten years later, that number had exploded to more than 750 million. Over just a decade, the mobile phone was transformed from a rare and unwieldy instrument to a palm-sized, affordable staple, taken for granted by poor fishermen in Kerala and affluent entrepreneurs in Mumbai alike. The Great Indian Phone Book investigates the social revolution ignited by what may be the most significant communications device in history, one which has disrupted more people and relationships than the printing press, wristwatch, automobile, or railways, though it has qualities of all four.

In this fast-paced study, Assa Doron and Robin Jeffrey explore the whole ecosystem of the cheap mobile phone. Blending journalistic immediacy with years of field-research experience in India, they portray the capitalists and bureaucrats who control the cellular infrastructure and wrestle over bandwidth rights, the marketers and technicians who bring mobile phones to the masses, and the often poor, village-bound users who adapt these addictive and sometimes troublesome devices to their daily lives. Examining the challenges cell phones pose to a hierarchy-bound country, the authors argue that in India, where caste and gender restrictions have defined power for generations, the disruptive potential of mobile phones is even greater than elsewhere.

The Great Indian Phone Book is a rigorously researched, multidimensional tale of what can happen when a powerful and readily available technology is placed in the hands of a large, still predominantly poor population.

Seagate business 4-Bay NAS storage (diskless)

Seagate informed us that it will launch an update firmware in a matter of weeks to resolve performance issues mentioned in this review. The server will be re-evaluated once the firmware is available. Seagate four business storage Bay NAS Server 4-Bay is the replacement for former BlackArmor NAS 440 company. Despite the name, it is a device of simple network storage that can benefit consumers and business users. In fact has fewer functions related to the business than other advanced servers consumer I have reviewed, as Synology DS412 + or the Pro of QNAP TS-469, and is also slower.

The new Seagate server comes in a much lower range of prices, however, starting from only $400 (in comparison with $650 or more than the other two). On top of that, it includes a powerful backup application and has a slot for storage module Universal (USM) that can be used with portable drives Seagate Backup Plus to offer a system of quick backup offsite.

If you are looking for a storage server based on networks of workhorse used mainly for local backup and data sharing, the Seagate NAS storage company is a cost-effective option. Those who want to get more out of a NAS server must pay more for one of these alternatives. USB 3.0 support (2), Universal (USM) storage of Gigabit Ethernet module slot (2), iSCSI, DLNA, machine, remote access media server time (native) Seagate NAS discovery, Seagate BlackArmor Backup 2011; mobile applications for Android and iOS devices.

Design
Seagate business storage 4 Bay NAS has a typical design of the server medium four-Bay and resembles a little to its predecessor, the BlackArmor 440. On the front, a big door opens up to four bays in front. Each of these bays have a tray that can be easily out where you need to install or replace the hard drives, and no tool is needed for the job.

The server can accommodate four standard SATA hard drives of any capacity, what with the hard drives may be as large as 4 TB, the new server can provide up to 16 of raw storage space. The server is available from 0TB (no disk) up to 16, with the cost ranging from $400 to $1,500. The NAS server is more affordable four bays on the market right now.

The server supports RAID configurations more standards available for sets of four units: RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 10 and JBOD. (For more information about raids, check this post). Since these are all standard attacks, be sure to choose a space of initial storage that is big enough to use in the long term. This is because it is not possible to expand the ability of the server to switch to disk drives greater capacity hard without RAID rebuild from scratch. Other servers NAS like Synology, or Netgear, offer a way to dynamically increase server storage space without even shut down the server. They also allow you to use hard disks of different capacities.

Also at the front, the server has a small LED screen resolution of two lines and two navigation buttons. The display shows the status of the server, such as your IP address, disk health and so on, and you can use the buttons to move between the different pages of the display. Each page contains two lines of information. You press and hold a button for the screen displays details of the subject. For example, by pressing and holding "NetworkStatus" displays the current IP of the server address and oppressed "Backup" will begin a fast backup job.

The business of Seagate storage can perform fast backup through the slot of the storage module Universal (USM), which is located on the top of the small LED screen. Seagate, presented at CES 2011, USM slot allows portable Seagate drives work as removable storage media, such as Zip drives were working with a Zip drive, but at the speed of SATA 3 (6Gbps), which is as fast as the speed of two internal hard drives when used inside a computer. When a Backup Plus portable drive is inserted into the slot of the USM, your content will be shared with all network (with restriction options), or you can make backup copies of certain folders of internal storage for the server in it. You can select which folders of backup of the handheld unit via the Web interface of the server.

The server has two USB 3.0 ports, one in the front and another at the back. These ports can be used to hold more storage or printers. You can also use the front USB port with other external storage device for quick backup function.

As a network, the business of storage storage device 4-Bay NAS has two ports Gigabit Ethernet on the back. Only one of the ports is necessary, but the two can be used together for purposes of security or load balancing. Unfortunately, not are they used together to increase the data rate of the server, a feature available on some other high end NAS servers.

I checked a version of total storage of business 4 Bay NAS, and it came with a CD containing applications NAS discovery of Seagate and Seagate NAS Backup. The first helps to identify the server in the network (by revealing your IP address) and launches the Web interface. You can also do so by pointing a browser to the IP address of the server. The latter is its powerful name backup software called Seagate BlackArmor Backup 2011, which is based on Acronis True Image 2011. This allows you to support all Windows computer and restore it to another computer or to another hard disk. For Mac, Seagate enterprise storage servers support Time Machine natively. In total, it was fairly easy to storage business 4-Bay NAS already in operation. Those who need further help can consult the included QuickStart Guide.

Why the new Facebook News Feed matters to your business

Facebook is rolling out a revamped News Feed starting Thursday that changes the way users view shared content. If your business has a Facebook Page, here's how the updated layout can help you engage users in new ways.

Facebook appears to be following in the footsteps (or stepping on the toes) of the popular Flipboard app. At a media event Thursday announcing the new News Feed, CEO Mark Zuckerberg likened the updated layout to a “personalized newspaper." Facebook won't have the broad diversity of content that Flipboard offers, but the way the new layout segregates content will make it more inviting.

Think about a newspaper for a minute. (They do still sell them at corner stores and gas stations, or you can ask your parents.) A newspaper is laid out in sections. The front page has the most important news, but there are sections devoted to sports, entertainment, politics, and other categories. That's essentially what Facebook is trying to let users create.

The existing News Feed displays a mash-up of posts from friends alongside Facebook pages you’ve liked . Those posts include check-ins, photos, videos, and status updates in some arcane order determined by an algorithm. The updated News Feed, by contrast, separates  types of content, and lets users choose to view only photos, or only music, or only updates from businesses like yours—in other words, the pages they’ve liked.

What the new News Feed means for you

Facebook claims that the average user spends 22 minutes on the site each day. One of the primary goals of the new look is to entice people to stick around longer. With some billion Facebook members, your business has a significant opportunity to engage that audience.

At the press event, Zuckerberg also revealed that 50 percent of the content in the Facebook News Feed comprises photos and videos. Put simply, Facebook users like to view and share photos and videos, so focus on developing engaging, high-quality pictures and videos for your business.

Facebook has had much more success with mobile advertising than it has from desktop platforms, so it’s no coincidence that the new layout, coming to mobile devices over future weeks, brings many elements from the mobile layout into the desktop browser. On top of providing a consistent look and feel for Facebook across platforms, the shift makes Facebook ads more prominent. If you choose to invest money to market on Facebook, the updated News Feed should help you get a greater return.

Don’t end up in the Classifieds

There will be a section of the new News Feed dedicated to pages that users have liked. Borrowing the personalized newspaper analogy, that section will be the equivalent of the classifieds section.

It's fair to assume that the users who have liked your Facebook page are at least peripherally interested in your products and services. However, people spend time on the social network to be, well, social. They want to see what their friends and family are doing, read interesting news, be entertained, and view cool pictures and videos. Their first thought won’t be, "Hey, I wonder if that company I liked has anything new to say." It probably won’t be their second or third thought, either.

Don’t wait for users to find you in the equivalent of the classifieds. To stay in the game and engage with your community, take your business to them. How do you do that? Use lots of photos and videos to help you business show up in the sections of the new Facebook News Feed, such as Photos, that will have the most traffic.
