Mobile apps have proliferated at a tremendous rate over the last few years. While this has been great for mobile users, the downside is that it is not easy to determine the true benefit or features of an app without using it extensively. Many times there are competing apps with similar functions or features, and even when trying to compare them by using them for a few days, it is not always possible or easy to determine the real benefits that they offer.
Mobile VOIP apps have great potential in lowering the cost of calls for users, by using free WiFi connections or cellular data instead of cellular voice services. This report presents a synthesis of tests conducted on the two most popular mobile VOIP apps - namely Skype and Viber. The testing was conducted in a rigorous and systematic manner, in order to assist users in determining whether VOIP is a viable alternative for voice calling on their mobile phones, and which app is best suited for their needs.
